Winterizing Your Car With HD Poxy Sealant

Our winter season is coming and providing ultimate protection to your vehicle’s paint is important!

Rainwater carries contaminants, which include acid rain and other industrial pollutants such as factory rail dust fallout; these contaminants land on your vehicle’s paint and dry, causing damage to your vehicle’s finish. Applying a durable sealant will protect your vehicle in the rainy months to come.

Types of sealants/waxes

There are different waxes, sealants, and polishes and they all provide a certain amount of shine and protection.

The most durable or long lasting are the synthetic products, which contain chemically bonding agents that are designed to stand up to the harshest environments. 3M makes a product called Performance Finish Synthetic Wax. This product provides protection with a shine. 3D offers an epoxy-type synthetic, which provides a bit more protection with a bit less shine or filling properties.

Methods of applying

It is important to prep the surface before applying. Removing any fallout or prior waxes from the surface will insure the best bonding of the sealant to the paint’s surface.

Sealants can be applied in two different ways:

  • By hand, using soft microfiber towels.
  • By machine, using either a  random, orbital, dual action, or a variable polishing machine equipped with a foam application pad.

Different types/brands of synthetic sealants require immediate removal after setting time is reached.

When to apply sealants

Your vehicle’s paint should always have protection from UV rays to the various types of fallout contamination, which falls from the atmosphere. The more extreme the weather is, the more important the paint is.

So, before the hot summer months arrive and before the cold, rainy, winter months come are the best times to apply the paint.

If you notice that the vehicle is wet and the water does not bead up or create small bubble-like shapes on the paint’s surface, it means that it does not have a protective coating. When the water stays on or sheaths off, it also is a determining factor as to whether the paint has a protective coating on it.
