Plastic (Polyurethane) Repair and Paint

Plastic (Polyurethane) Repair and Paint

Today’s vehicles are not made the same as they were in the past as more plastic has replaced metal. Most of the trimming, bumpers, and moldings are made from a plastic material known as polyurethane. The down side is that it is easily damaged. The upside is that polyurethane can be repaired.

The most common types of damage are scrapes, dents, creases, and punctures. The type of damage dictates the process used to repair the damage.

To start, the vehicle should be properly prepped. This includes covering all areas of the vehicle that will not be repaired with specially designed plastics and papers.

The first step is to repair the damaged area. This can involve reshaping by using just the right amount of heat; filling in low, high, or uneven areas with special fillers and putties;  and/or using specially designed grinding tools and sanding papers to restore jagged edges.

After the area has the factory shape restored, it is time to prep the area for paint. This involves automotive solvents, prepping agents, and  flexible primers to make the paint color adhere. After the primer is meticulously sanded and prepped, it can be painted.

Proper painting and blending takes many years of experience to master. Matching paint colors and blending new paint into existing paint is a true art form. Using a state-of-the-art paint matching system, the proper color and amount of paint is made and then air brushed on the repair area. Finally, a specially designed fast-drying clear coat is applied then color sanded, polished, and waxed for a factory finish.
